17 Apr 2015: I updated the graphics on the site to higher-quality (HD, if you will). These are the logo and icons. The color scheme is flattened now to shades of blue, but you'll only notice the sharpness of the graphics if you're viewing the site on an HD or Retina device like an iPhone, iPad, or MacBook with Retina or a Nexus 7 2013 or Nexus 9 tablet or Nexus 5 or 6 phone or later. I checked on non-HD devices, and the graphics scale pretty much the same as I did manually to get the smaller size versions I used before. Hopefully it's worth it for the extra file size. If for some reason you get extra-large images, try refreshing the page, since likely the CSS file is a cached version. I updated the CSS to scale down the graphics to the size of the previous buttons. It's been a good learning (and re-learning) experience for me, and I hope to make it more desktop-friendly (while staying mobile-friendly). Then maybe I can focus on content, like finally updating the concerts and tech pages.
-
11 Apr 2015: Welcome to the new site, Arcane Gel. New domain, same content, more or less. I had to go through and update graphics and other references to the old domain, but if you've seen the old place, not much else has changed.
-
25 Feb 2015: I did some more streamlining, cleanup, etc. Hopefully this site looks much better on mobile devices too.
-
10 Feb 2015: Well...lots of time and no updates. I've been pretty busy with social media and life in general. Big announcement, though: the res-alian domain is going away. I will make an bigger announcement soon, accompanied with a website redesign, at which point both the old and new domains will work until the old domain expires in May.
-
05 Jan 2012: Happy New Year! I made the site more mobile-browser-friendly. It didn't take too much work since I'd already coded the pages with PHP, XHTML, CSS, and strict compliance. I pretty much just had to add the meta viewport tag to my html headers and do a bit of layout rearrangement. I've also been updating the tech page every so often.
-
28 Jul 2011: Updated the tech page again, adding Windows 7 and my setup details.
-
22 Nov 2010: Updated and cleaned up the tech page a bit. New details on AGDI (KQ1, KQ2 fixes and now supporting Mac), IA (SQ2 progress update), and ScummVM (SCI support).
-
05 Nov 2010: Welcome, Spencer! Born today, he's Timmy and Evelyn's new little brother. I'm still quite behind on the gallery, but I put up Spencer's mini-site. Enjoy!
-
26 Sep 2010: I'm quite behind again on the gallery, but I finally updated the concerts page and the bands page, after the recent Muse concert. I had two other concerts unposted till now. I still have lost of new shows to post, but those will come sooner or later.
-
27 Dec 2009: Just installed Windows 7 64-bit on my PC notebook, and so far so good. All the drivers for my dv6736nr (dv6700 series HP Pavilion) were built into Windows 7 except for the nVidia GeForce graphics, nForce AR chipset, and the Ricoh 5-in-1 card reader. See my setup in the tech area for details.
-
09 Dec 2009: I haven't been able to process new pictures for the gallery yet, but I did get to update the catalog of CDs we own. Disney items are now on their own page. You may notice the absence of classical CDs and other collections. If there's enough demand, I can make pages for those too. Somehow I doubt it.
-
20 Sep 2009: Now playing: gallery pages 28 and 29! Now I'm up to the beginning of this year. Hopefully soon I'm catch up to the present and keep it up.
-
14 Aug 2009: The gallery and Timmy's and Evelyn's mini-sites now feature slideshow views. The Javascript-free method uses HTTP redirect to get the next photo. Firefox and the Windows version of Safari seem to handle the back button properly with this (skipping back over the previous photos to the standard view).
-
29 Jul 2009: I revamped the DVD list format (tabular now) and also updated the list. You may have noticed I've been updating the CD list somewhat regularly already without having to announce it. I'll continue that practice and extend it to DVDs.
-
07 Jul 2009: Now playing: gallery pages 25, 26, and 27! Now I'm only a year and a half behind. Yes, it took three pages to cover eight months.
-
22 Jun 2009: Gallery page 24 is now open! Last time I updated the gallery, I was only a year and change behind. Now I'm two years behind, but with momentum.
-
11 Jan 2009: I just noticed there's some old and erroneous info on my computer setup, so I fixed it. My HP notebook (dv6736nr (dv6000 series)) kept failing the wifi (not listed hardware) when resuming from hibernation in Windows or even starting Linux, but at random times. I should have figured sooner that the two combined meant a hardware failure and not an improper driver in both systems. I replaced it for cheap from eBay, and it works fine now. Though yesterday the problem came back for Linux, but that's because the alternate driver was stil enabled. I disabled that (to allow the ndiswrapper version to take effect), and it works fine again.
Also, I picked up a Power Mac G4 computer from a neighbor. With all the problems I've had in Windows and the only near-perfect software support in Linux (i.e. no EAC (except with certain Wine settings, none that worked for me so far), no iTunes (even with Wine) for my iPod touch (our other iPods can be synched with other software)) I have to keep dual-booting, and I need a singular solution from a widely-supported OS. Plus it's a POSIX-compliant OS, so I can just about do everything I can do with my Windows/Linux system (EAC may still take some tweaking). But this is only a test machine so far. I need to get used to the interface before I actually migrate to a Mac as my main machine (i.e. laptop).
Still not much else different here, but at least I've been updating the CD lists. They change so often that I don't even announce those events here.
Also, I turned 0x21 today. If you understand what that means, drink.
-
18 May 2008: Yes, it's been almost a year since I updated this page. I finally made some time to update everyone on our activities in the journal. You may have noticed that I've been gradually updating the CD list, but now the bands page is also updated. Also, I guess I never mentioned the gallery goes up to page 23 in these announcements, but it's been there for a while now. I also removed the counters since they stopped working some time ago, and they're not really important anyway. Life has been busy, but hopefully I can find more time to update this site. And finish the gallery at least up to the end of 2007.
-
04 Sep 2007: The photo gallery now has a new page, 22, which goes up to the beginning of Sep 2006. Enjoy!
-
27 Jul 2007: Well, it's been a couple of months since posting my last journal entry. I've got some editing to do, but it's been busy at work since our vacation in France in May. Stay tuned. In the meantime, I've upgraded my server with a dual-core Athlon 64 and reflected the changes in the tech page.
-
19 Mar 2007: I made some fixes to the photo gallery (missing information on page 16) and added some more pages (19-21).
-
01 Mar 2007: I finally got some photo gallery updates done. It goes to page 18 and covers up to a month after Evelyn was born.
-
24 Jan 2007: I just discovered a new Sierra game remake, King's Quest III: To Heir Is Human, by Infamous Adventures! I put up some info on the tech page.
-
05 Sep 2006: I've finally posted (and updated) my lists of CDs and DVDs, accessible from the main page. Enjoy!
-
15 Aug 2006: The mirrors are now updated again. Hopefully this will go more smoothly (thus quickly) in the future. Also, I updated my title case program, Title Fix.
-
10 May 2006: The mirrors are now updated to the new style, directory structure, and content. Of course, space limitations make less available on each mirror lower on the list, but, eh, what can you do?
-
22 Apr 2006: I updated the bands page with some new banners and a few new bands too. Happy Birthday to Maureen, who is now as old as I am (to the year)!
-
19 Apr 2006: At long last, the photo gallery has been extended to page 15, going up to 2003! Enjoy. Also, apologies to users of IE looking at the galleries with funky tables. That code is fixed now. If it still looks weird, hopefully a browser refresh (typically F5 or Ctrl-R) will do.
-
10 Apr 2006: Another small change: I updated the splash page to reflect the change I made to the menubar in all of the other pages. I also changed the links to Claire's Room and the daycare to 88x31 pixel banners.
-
07 Apr 2006: Yay! The gallery is finished! (Till 2002.) I filled in the gap (i.e. page 4), and I restructured the picture storage in a separate folder, so now different pages can refer to them, such as the newly updated mini-sites for Timmy and Evelyn. You'll notice larger versions of most of the existing pictures. Also, Timmy's mp3s from page 6 were moved to their chronologically correct location in page 9.
There's also a cleaner style with the top banner and thinner margins for all of the pages. I've also updated the concerts page (found the Lion King ticket), the web help page (new Firefox, a list of extensions, and links to Wikipedia and Notepad++), and all pages with links to various media files and text files (_vimrc, ppt, pdf, mp3 (including wav replaced by mp3), etc.) have those files now replaced with zip files containing them. It makes it easier for me to have to deal with only php/html, gif, jpg, png, css, and zip files for my site, and nothing else.
-
20 Mar 2006: New icons for the sections without the same style icons on the front (splash) page. I'll do an overhaul of the code for the whole site in the same manner as the journal, but it's a long-term project.
-
16 Mar 2006: At long last, I updated the journal and the layout of the wedding website and the co-op website. Each page is in its own directory now in both. Also, I fixed the wedding website so it truly is XHTML 1.0 compliant. I've scanned pictures from undergrad days till the last film camera days in 2002, with a few still missing, but soon the gallery will be updated and probably reformatted too. Also, if you haven't seen them yet, there are pictures on Evelyn's mini-site from after her Baptism through Christmas and New Year's.
-
09 Dec 2005: As promised, I posted the pictures from Evelyn's Baptism. See her her mini-site for all the pictures (with a better layout!) or go directly to the Baptism pictures.
-
29 Nov 2005: New concerts are up, along with new shows. I've also updated the icons at the bottom of the main page.
-
17 Nov 2005: I put in a new section for software I've written and released on SourceForge.net. I've haven't linked it anywhere else but here, but I'll add it to the tech page and maybe the main and sitemap pages too.
-
28 Sep 2005: I've updated the way I handle links in the journal. Twice. For links in bulleted lists, I now first list the title, then the URL below it in smaller type (both are hyperlinks to the URL), then my response, if I have one. If I don't include a title, you'll see just the URL as a hyperlink in regular type.
-
27 Jul 2005: The announcements section is now streamlined is a similar way to the journal in functionality. The only noticeable difference (so far) is that the archive contains everything instead of only entries older than the last five. Also, the date in brackets on the site map reflect the last announcement date.
-
19 Jul 2005: I've gone back to daily updates, and the new server appears to be working well and fast. I finally updated the server list, search page (available on the main and home servers only), and the tech page, and I'm adding journal entries much more frequently.
-
04 Jul 2005: Happy Independence Day! I'm working on getting the whole site along with its sub-site online at an externally hosted server. Don't be alarmed if you see this page (when viewed from the main server) transition from web.res-alian.com:8008/... (my personal server) to web.res-alian.com/... (since port 80 has actually worked for some time now) to www.res-alian.com/... (on the new host). The mirrors will still be up, but not necessarily updated as frequently, since the uptime of this new host is close to "always." Also coming soon is my omnibus backlog journal entry I've been accumulating since the beginning of the year.
-
17 Jun 2005: I finally got a better color scheme for the sitemap buttons. I used the color scheme generator at WellStyled.com to figure it all out, with some of my own modifications. I'll update my journal soon.
-
12 May 2005: I added some Moby essays in the inspiring readings part of the main page. Eventually they'll be complete (all albums with essays) and accurate.
-
10 May 2005: Ben and Carl and I went to the Moby concert on 08 May, and I have yet to catch up on sleep. I added my quickie review and the set list on the concerts page.
-
05 May 2005: Updated mirrors! I finally went through all of the mirrors and updated them with the current directory structure and icon set. Note: not all mirrors will have everything, especially pictures, especially large pictures.
-
23 Apr 2005: I got more icons done. Enjoy.
-
21 Apr 2005: I finally made a journal page icon, referenced the journal on the main page, and made new interactive (upon mouse hover) icons for all my other pages referenced on the site map. Eventually I'll get to the other pages, but I wanted to get these done first.
-
18 Apr 2005: I got most of the directory restructuring done. I may have some cross links incorrect between pages, but the menubar and sitemap will always work. You may also notice that I'm going for XHTML standardization, which is a little tougher than HTML 4 primarily because of the requirement to use closing tags and terminate empty ones. I've validated most of the pages here, but not all, and I haven't even been able to verify all of the page references. I'll have to go through them all eventually, but like I said, the menubar at the top is your friend.
-
05 Apr 2005: I added the U2 Vertigo Tour to the list of concerts and finally posted the ticket for Santana. I also added more shows, all from 1999, including Stomp, Forbidden Broadway, and Fosse.
-
04 Apr 2005: I fixed links and logos for student organizations, finally and made some other minor fixes. U2 Vertigo tour and Santana ticket coming soon.
-
01 Apr 2005: I fixed various links that were careless mistakes on my part on the transition to streamlined PHP code in various pages.
-
31 Mar 2005: I updated the layout of the journal again, putting the pre-journal entries in my new standard format. I also added Evelyn to the "About Us" on the main page and on the contact page.
-
25 Mar 2005: I updated the layout of the journal so now the main journal page shows the most recent entry and a clickable permanent link to it. Each journal entry in the archive now has its own clickable, bookmarkable link back to it (the date). I've done some other general streamlining, but most previous visitors won't notice much difference except the tooltips showing the destination of links.
-
14 Feb 2005: Introducing...baby Evelyn! She was born today, exactly four years after Timmy! How about that! There will be more pictures to come, but I took some time before sleeping at the hospital to come home, post pictures and the birth announcement, and change cars (to the one with two car seats)!
-
05 Jan 2005: I've restructured the journal archive section. Just a little FYI. Also, eventually I'll put a real link to the journal on this main page as well as the splash page, complete with icon. Some of you may also have noticed the week-long server outage. Hopefully if you used the main addresses (http://www.res-alian.com/, http://journal.res-alian.com/, http://wedding.res-alian.com/, http://mayclaire.res-alian.com/, etc.), you were redirected to the alternate mirrors, which unfortunately weren't updated since 18 Dec 2004. They should be updated now. Also, I fixed the search page (main server only). D'oh!
-
18 Dec 2004: Not personal news, but I'm promoting it here from my journal because it's important news for a dedicated section of this site: a Hitchhiker's movie! See the details in the Hitchhiker's section.
-
19 Nov 2004: I added a search page, which is only available on the main server. Notice the link in the title bar.
-
10 Nov 2004: I got the new version of the Focus Last Selected Tab (0.8.1) extension yesterday, but I didn't post it yet. This extension makes tabs behave like the Windows taskbar buttons, i.e., when closing a tab, the next most recently viewed tab gets focus. Also, it turns out that User Agent Switcher 0.6 still works with Firefox 1.0, but you have to uninstall it if it was installed with 1.0PR or earlier, then reinstall it with 1.0 final.
-
09 Nov 2004: Mozilla Firefox 1.0 final release is here!!! Currently, the only (officially 1.0-final-compatible) extension I use is Tabbrowser Preferences (0.9.95), so you may want to wait until your favorite extensions are available for 1.0 final. This version (0.9.95) actually works with Gmail links now; previously it still made new windows for links in emails. As always, be sure to uninstall previous versions of Firefox and extensions.
-
02 Oct 2004: Yikes! My server was out for another 8 hours from about 04h00 to 12h00 PST/GMT-8. I noticed the lack of fan noise when I woke up (from oversleeping). This problem is serious now, and I'm getting that new case soon. Please continue to check this page even if it happens to go out once; it'll be back. Or, check my mirror sites, which should always be up, but not updated as often (read: weekly).
-
01 Oct 2004: Help is on the way! For my server, at least. I'll put the main server in a new case next week. I also updated the band logos to make them more homogeneous (in width), making it cleaner. Next are the web help and computer resources logos.
-
29 Sep 2004: D'oh! There was an outage today for about 6 hours today (12h00 to 18h00 PST/GMT-8). I guess I'll be upgrading the server soon. I apologize for the inconvenience.
-
22 Sep 2004: I've converted my announcements section into a journal. I'll keep important announcements (site updates and major life changes) here, but please visit my journal for more comprehensive news, which will be updated every weekday. Note that the "Last modified" date near the bottom of this page and the sitemap page reflects the file date of the main page, so the journal at least as up-to-date as this page. Journal entries may not be available till later in the day, but they'll definitely be available by the day following the entry date.
-
21 Sep 2004: Mozilla Firefox 1.0PR, the best free web browser available today (an opinion shared by many), has reached 1 million downloads! Yeah! Also, in "About Us" I added anagrams for our names and a link to Wordsmith.org to make anagrams.
-
15 Sep 2004: Mozilla Firefox 1.0PR update: if you're having trouble installing extensions, make sure you enable "Allow web sites to install software" in the Web Features section of Options/Preferences. Also, I've just added a Moby link in the bands page and indicated when I first listened to some of these artists.
-
14 Sep 2004: Mozilla Firefox 1.0PR (pre-release) just got released today! See my web help page for details.
-
02 Sep 2004: I got to the root of the counters problem, and I used the error logs to correct the counter database values. It's not like the counters are scientific or anything, though, and I may still remove them one day.
-
01 Sep 2004: I'm aware the counters haven't been working for at least a week, and I'll try to get them working again soon. Or I may end up not using counters, which really simplifies the web design.
-
26 Aug 2004: In memoriam: Maureen's grandmother, Timmy's great-grandmother, Lola Alice, passed away today. Her life has positively affected so many lives, and she will be missed. Also, please remember my grandmother, Timmy's other great-grandmother, Concha, or Ima to those who knew her in our family, who passed away a year and a day ago, though I hadn't previously mentioned her passing on this site. May they both rest in peace.
-
11 Aug 2004: The pros and cons of "trusted computing" at EFF.org (Electronic Frontier Foundation) is a good article, though almost a year old, analyzing trusted computing proposals and suggestions for improvement. The Electronic Frontier Foundation is an authority on digital rights and freedom.
-
04 Aug 2004: Mozilla Firefox 0.9.3 is out. Also, I have removed all "target=_blank" code from links, so you can decide for yourself if you want a new window/tab or not when clicking on links. Shift-click for new window (Mozilla, Mozilla Firefox, Opera, IE), Ctrl-click for new tab (Mozilla, Mozilla Firefox).
-
03 Aug 2004: More code streamlining. Added links to info about TCPA, computer help, and more humor in the computer resources page.
-
23 Jul 2004: Added more computer resources such as desktop publishing and HID hardware.
-
16 Jul 2004: Added links to the classic Mac game, Glider, which the author has made freely available, and includes PRO for Mac OS 9 and OS X and 4.0 for OS 6 and 7 and Windows. See the computer resources page for details.
-
15 Jul 2004: Yes, we have wedding pictures (full album)! It took about a month to trim all of the pictures and write the code, but it's now finished. I used GIMP, vim, and Mozilla Firefox on Win32. Visit the wedding page for details.
-
14 Jul 2004: Help stop TCPA! The "Trusted Computing Platform Alliance" (TCPA), or "Trusted Computing Group" (TCG), aims to allow only "signed software" to run on TC-compliant hardware, annihilating open-source software like GNU/Linux, OpenOffice, and Mozilla, or anything you may want to program yourself. And your iPod may be next, including your collection (legal or not) of mp3s. This initiative was started by Intel and now supported by Microsoft, and unfortunately, HP and AMD. The "aim" is to prevent software and media piracy as well as protect users from viruses and attacks, but the group is slowly backing down many benefit claims for users.
Please, please visit Against TCPA or No TCPA!, and also the 'Trusted Computing' FAQ and Can you trust your computer? (GNU.org site) for details. For general digital freedom issues, also please see the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF). EFF is fighting for your digital rights and freedom, not corporations.
What can you do to help? Support (use) open-source software like Mozilla Firefox, OpenOffice, and The GIMP, which are excellent, if not better, alternatives to IE, Office, and Photoshop, respectively. Read all the facts, including what is claimed by the TCG. Read George Orwell's 1984. (I haven't yet, but I'm inspired to do so now.) Write to elected government officials. Sign the online petition (for Germany; when it becomes available) on paradome. Spread the word.
-
09 Jul 2004: For Windows users, get Mozilla Firefox 0.9.2, which fixes a vulnerability in 0.9.1 and below. Still highly recommended over IE, which still doesn't have a fix for at least one known security hole. See my web help page for details.
-
30 Jun 2004: Mozilla Firefox 0.9.1 is out. Please read my web help page with notes on its release. Bottom line: if you uninstall a previous version of Firefox, startup and (most recent) extensions will work.
-
25 Jun 2004: The Children's Cooperative Daycare page has been updated with no frames and uses PHP on the main and Lycos FR servers.
-
23 Jun 2004: The wedding page has been updated with no frames and uses PHP on the main and Lycos FR servers.
-
17 Jun 2004: New logo! The house represents "resident" and the 'a' inside it represents "alian". It's a "resident alian". Also, see the full server list (all of the places this site is hosted). For details, please see my web help page.
-
15 Jun 2004: Mozilla Firefox 0.9 has been released, but it has some extension issues.
-
06 Jun 2004: I've overhauled the style on the page again. It's more streamlined, cooler-looking, and easier to maintain. Also, our new ISP also blocks port 80, so if you're viewing this on web.res-alian.com you'll see a ":8008" attached to it.
-
15 May 2004: I've overhauled the style on the page, but most changes are unnoticeable. All styles are handled by an external stylesheet (solid.css).
-
22 Apr 2004: The server is up and running again. Solid. Happy Birthday Maureen! Happy Earth Day too!
-
13 Apr 2004: Well, we're officially homeowners, actually since last week, but it looks like the new cable modem service may take a while to get, so you know what that means: the server may go down in a few days. The downtime shouldn't last more than a few days if it happens at all. Usually it takes about a week to get the cable installer to the house from the time of request. Just a heads-up.
-
29 Oct 2003: Argh! You may have noticed this site down for a couple of weeks. When we moved the server down from my parents' house two weeks ago, I didn't notice the website didn't work from the outside until yesterday. It turns out our ISP blocks incoming port 80 requests (http) to discourage web server use. Our current workaround is to use port 8008, so http://www.res-alian.com will forward to http://web.res-alian.com:8008/, and all internal pages will start with that, so any direct-link bookmarks you may have will not work. It's a pain in the arse, but it's all I can do until we move or change ISPs.
-
20 Oct 2003: Maureen and I went to my 10-year (yikes) high school reunion two days ago, and I got to reconnect with some old friends. And I do mean old =). Hopefully those of you I got to talk to find your way here. I'll be adding your uniqueness to my own...er, your home page to my friends list if you (a) have one and (b) want it there. Also, I'll be doing a CSS overhaul of this site soon. Most people won't notice the difference, but it will make life easier for me. When that happens, styles will load from an external style sheet.
-
23 Sep 2003: I've been quiet since getting the server back on line. I've got a lot of pictures to update eventually, but we're still getting settled in back in San Diego. I had time enough to fix the US Flag and my "shoveling guy" animation at the bottom of this page. The border is removed from the shoveler, and the animations on both loop forever now.
-
03 Jul 2003: This site will be shut down on 14 Jul for our move back to California. Hopefully it will be back up the next day or by 16 Jul. Happy Independence Day!
-
20 Apr 2003: Added Timmy's Easter picture taken yesterday. Go here until I get the picture up in the photo gallery.
-
11 Mar 2003: Upgraded my computer, so updated my setup data on the computer resources page.
-
07 Mar 2003: Windows XP Professional help for Windows 2000 Professional security fans here.
-
13 Feb 2003: Added more games and emulation sources, specifically Tierra Entertainment and Amiga emulators, and a top-level menu here.
-
02 Feb 2003: More emulation links in the computer resources section, including one off-beat one. The screenshots are the best.
-
20 Jan 2003: Okay, folks, here it is, what you've all been waiting for: a link to our wedding website. Knock yourself out.
-
19 Jan 2003: New stuff! I made an animated GIF for the link to Maureen's class pages, the X parasite from Metroid Fusion. I used stills from a GBA emulator and Adobe ImageReady 3.0 in case you're wondering. Feel free to rip it, just give me and Nintendo credit. Find the GBA emulator by the link in the computer resources section.
-
11 Jan 2003: Spam alert! For my birthday, I got several "returned mail" receipts from a spammer using my email address in the "From:" field but using various real names. Argh! Sorry about that if you got one, but IT'S NOT FROM ME! Click here for details.
-
04 Jan 2003: I got married today! Yes, Maureen and I finally tied the knot today in San Diego. I'll give details soon....
-
14 Dec 2002: Like Dance Dance Revolution? In addition to the Dance With Intensity simulator link on the computer resources page, there's a link to a Macromedia Flash version of DDR called Flash Flash Revolution.
-
10 Dec 2002: Independence Day! All the counters now run directly from the server instead of UCSD's counter.
-
24 Nov 2002: All new MP3 clips from Timmy's recording session last week! Check them out in gallery page 11 (bottom).
-
12 Nov 2002: General cleanup. Not very exciting.
-
05 Nov 2002: The computer resources are completely updated. The games section is all new and links to games you can play! A web help page for people new to the web or to web authoring or seeking some new web resources.
-
31 Oct 2002: Alrighty then. I fixed the concerts section and the fun page. Happy Halloween.
